How your fave celebs celebrated Mandela Day

mandela dayThe 18th of July marks a very special day in South Africa. It is a day known as Mandela Day where we celebrate the great life of the father of our nation, the late Nelson Mandela. But it doesn’t end there, we also give 67 minutes of our time to help those in need. Yesterday people from all over the country and some in other parts of the world spent 67 minutes giving back in honour of the Madiba. Here’s a look at how some of our favourite celebrities spent their 67 minutes:

My afternoon stop was at Jabulani Khakibos boys home in Berea, and their motto is “Positively impacting the lives of children living and working in the streets.”. The boys age from 8-18yrs and over the last 3 months two boys graduated from Boston College. Their methodology is to intrinsically develop and build the man within, from teaching them when they come back from school how to work with money, budget, life skills and making the right choices for their young lives. At Connect Channel we knitted 100 blankets over the last two months and today it was our blessing to be able to bless and keep the boys warm. We gave the boys haircuts, played soccer and had a meal together. #ConnectCares #ConnectTV #ConnectChannel #BeTheLegacy #Madiba100

Our President thinks Obama can’t dance?

Yesterday the 16th annual Nelson Mandela lecture took place in Johannesburg and there was one very special guest speaker. Mr Barack Obama, the former President of the U.S in case you didn’t know. Besides the inspiring and tear-jerking speeches, it seemed to be a battle of the presidents as our President Cyril Ramaphose poked fun at Obama. As he took to the podium to begin his speech he started off by saying Mr Obama’s dancing skills were not up to scratch. Ouch…

His exact words were: “I have laid in bed and dreamt of being like Madiba, Obama has achieved this. Nobel Peace Laureate, commitment to empowering young people. One area where he cannot match Madiba, he cannot dance as well as Madiba.”

When Obama finally had a chance to speak he admitted to being confused but couldn’t help but agree because his wife, Michelle was the one with the dance moves.

Twitter decided to chime in as usual and posted receipts of all the accused to prove Ramaphose’s allegations.

Take a look at all the videos below and let us know what you think:

Now, all we need is a video of Cyril dancing to get to the bottom of this.

AKA wants more local songs in the air

AkaAKA is notorious for voicing his opinion on Twitter and this week was no different. The rapper tweeted at South African Airways asking them why their on-board playlist does not consist of 100% local music. See the tweet here:

To which the airline replied that they would take his suggestion into consideration. Which is basically code for “pipe down and listen to your own music.”

His fans had a field day with this tweet, some on his side but some saying he was being too sensitive and even some poking fun at his music accusing him of autotune.

Say what?! Kylie Jenner’s fans are donating money to make her a billionaire

KylieEverybody knows and loves the Kardashian/Jenner clan, and aside from swatching new lipsticks on her Snapchat story daily, the youngest sister, Kylie Jenner, has just made history. Like, actual history.

The 20-year-old has just made Forbes’ list of America’s Richest Self-Made Women (coming in at number 27) thanks to her makeup brand, Kylie Cosmetics.

Since she launched it just two years ago (can you believe it was that recent?), she has sold over $630million (£475million) worth of cosmetics – that is A LOT of matte liquid lipsticks.

That also means she is worth more than sister, Kim Kardashian, and even Beyoncé who are valued at around $350million, which isn’t too shabby either.

According to Forbes, if Jenner carries on growing Kylie Cosmetics at the rate she has, she will become the youngest self-made billionaire in HISTORY, overtaking Mark Zuckerberg, who became a billionaire at 23. You go, girl.

But Kylie still has a little way to go and needs to make a casual $100m before she beats the Facebook founder. And it seems her fans are so desperate to help their idol reach her goal that they’ve set up a GoFundMe page called ‘Let’s Get Kylie Jenner to a Billion.’

The page reads: “Kylie Jenner was on the cover of Forbes Magazine today for having a net worth of 900 million dollars, which is heartbreaking. I don’t want to live in a world where Kylie Jenner doesn’t have a billion dollars. WE MUST RAISE 100 MILLION DOLLARS TO HELP HER GET TO A BILLION, PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD, THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT.”

This is not a drill, people.

So far, 131 people have donated to the cause and raised £1,853 towards Kylie’s bank balance.

Is this real life?

Forbes defines a self-made woman as “anyone who didn’t inherit any part of their money.” And while technically this is true and Kylie has built a cosmetics empire alone, it definitely helped that she’s spent her life in the limelight as part of one of the most well-known families in America.

According to the profile, “Basically, all Jenner does to make all that money is leveraged her social media following.” The following being 110 million followers on Instagram alone, which, in part, will have been down to her family’s status.

Kylie has become Forbes’ latest cover star and said in an Instagram post: “It’s incredible to be recognised for something I’m so passionate about, and I’m really grateful for that. I’ve always loved makeup and worked really hard to bring the first lip kit to market.”

“Connecting with my fans and creating products that excited them has been an incredible process. I’ve learned so much along the way and I hope to inspire others to follow their dreams.”

Yaaas, girl power!

We can see why Serena Williams’s Wimbledon speech ‘for mothers’ had Meghan Markle in tears

Serena Williams US Open Pregnancy leaveSerena Williams lost to Angelique Kerber — a good friend and frequent rival — at Wimbledon on Saturday (6-3, 6-3) but that knock should by no means disqualify her from being the Greatest Of All Time.

Case in point? The gracious and beautiful speech she gave in the interview following her defeat, in which she kept her head held high and told mothers watching, “I was playing for you today.”

As Williams headed off the court following Kerber’s victory, the interviewer opened with, “It’s only your fourth tournament back [since giving birth to her daughter, Alexis], and you didn’t know what to expect. You had such a great tournament, and you played so well.”

Williams, nodding and emotional, replied, “It was such an amazing tournament for me. I was really happy to get this far.”

She continued, her voice breaking a bit as the stands erupted in applause: “It’s obviously disappointing, but I can’t be disappointed. I have so much to look forward to — I’m literally just getting started. So I look forward to it.”

“You’ve hardly played any matches, absolutely,” the interviewer said. “I tell you, there are mums everywhere that say, ‘How has she done this?’ You are super-human supermum.”

“No, I’m just me and that’s all I can be,” Williams responded. “But for all the moms out there, I was playing for you today, and I tried. But you know, Angelique played really well; she played out of her mind, so you know, it was really good, and I look forward to just continuing to be back out here and doing what I do best.”

Wimbledon’s official account tweeted a clip of the interview with the caption, “Grace, poise and emotion. A runner-up’s interview given by a true champion.”

You can see that her words touched two fans in the stands in particular—notably Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton, who were both in attendance at the final round. At the 40-second mark in the clip below, both duchesses—one a mom herself, the other Williams’ close friend—look visibly moved as Williams talks about playing for the moms watching the match.

The interviewer then asked what she said to Kerber during their hug after her victory. Williams responded, “Well, she’s an incredible person, Angelique is, and she’s a really good friend, so I’m really happy for it. It’s her first title so I know she’s going to really enjoy it and enjoy the moment. So congrats again, it’s amazing.”

Fans reacted to her speech with a ton of support, emphasizing the life-threatening complications that arose during her daughter’s birth and the incredible way Williams drove herself in just a few matches to be a Wimbledon finalist.

Her husband, Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian, also posted an incredible tribute to Williams:

“Days after our baby girl was born, I kissed my wife goodbye before surgery and neither of us knew if she would be coming back. We just wanted her to survive—10 months later, she’s in the #Wimbledon final. Congratulations, @angie.kerber. @serenawilliams will be holding a trophy again soon—she’s got the greatest one waiting at home for her. Our family knows she’ll win many more trophies, too. She’s just getting started. And I couldn’t be more proud.”

A true champion, even in defeat—and definitely, absolutely, still the G.O.A.T.
