Aretha Franklin has passed away at 76 years old

aretha franklinAretha Franklin has passed away at 76 years old, the singer’s publicist confirmed to the Associated Press on Thursday (August 16).

News of the singer’s ailing health broke on Monday, August 13, when WDIV morning anchor Evrod Cassimy, a close friend to Franklin, reported she was “gravely ill.” “BREAKING NEWS: I am so saddened to report that the Queen of Soul and my good friend, Aretha Franklin is gravely ill,” he tweeted early Monday. “I spoke with her family members this morning. She is asking for your prayers at this time. I’ll have more details as I’m allowed to release.”

In a separate on-air report, Cassimy expanded: “Right now Aretha’s asking people here in the city of Detroit, where she calls home, to pray for her. As for her condition her—her illness—right now, we’re asked not to release that information.”

Franklin was born on March 25, 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee. Her father, C. L. Franklin, was a very famous pastor and civil rights activist who moved the family to Detroit when she was 2 years old. In 1956, Franklin released her first album, Songs of Faith, kicking off a six-decade reign of soul music. By the end of the 1960s, Franklin was known as the Queen of Soul: a title that’s stayed with her throughout her illustrious career.

Franklin has 18 Grammy Awards and 44 nominations. She’s been a staple on the charts, too, with two number-one hits on Billboard‘s Hot 100 (including “Respect”) and 17 top-10 hits.

In February 2017, Franklin announced she was retiring after over 60 years in the music business. “I am retiring this year,” she told WDIV Local 4 in Detroit at the time. “I will be recording, but this will be my last year in concert. This is it.” Her last performance was in November 2017 for the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

Several musicians took to Twitter shortly after Cassimy reported on Franklin’s health to express their love.

This story is breaking. We’ll report more information as it comes in.

Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson are apparently engaged after a few weeks of dating

Ariana GrandeShe broke up with Mac Miller earlier this year and candidly spoke about their toxic breakup, but it seems that Ariana Grande has found love again – and we are so happy for our favourite pop star.

According to US Weekly, the singer is ENGAGED to Saturday Night Live star Pete Davidson.

The magazine reports that the pair were telling people they were engaged as they partied at Robert Pattinson’s birthday party.

“They are a perfect fit. They are not rushing to get married,” an insider said. “Their friends are really excited and supportive.”

Another source told the publication: “Their moms have met. They’ve been very public with their relationship on social media, and they are very in love,” and a third added: “They are looking forward to a very long engagement together.”

GLAMOUR UK has reached out to a rep for Ariana and is awaiting comment.

Ariana and Pete are yet to confirm the news but they do seem super happy together. The reports come after Pete shared a snap on his Instagram page looking all loved up with Ariana a few weeks ago. The best part? The new couple were donning Harry Potter outfits.

the chamber of secrets has been opened …

Pete can be seen wearing a Gryffindor house jumper, while Ariana opted for the Slytherin one.

The photo was captioned: “the chamber of secrets has been opened.”

We also spotted a comment on the snap from Ariana, saying: “u tryna slytherin (i’m deleting my account now).” You guys!

Then Ariana took to her own Instagram to share the cutest snap with her new boyfriend. The young couple can be seen cuddling up in the photo, which is captioned: “i thought u into my life 💭 woah ! look at my mind.” We can’t get enough of this pair already.

And it seems that the relationship is the real deal, with Pete even getting a tattoo in homage to his new beau.

Taking to social media, Pete revealed that he’s had not one but two inkings dedicated to Ariana.

Not only does he have her iconic Dangerous Woman bunny ears behind his ear, he also has her initials, “AG,” emblazoned on his hand.

The new romance comes after Ariana split up with Mac Miller after two years together. Pete, meanwhile, broke up with comedian Cazzie David recently.

Following her split from Mac, Ariana spoke candidly about the breakup – dubbing the relationship ‘toxic’, ‘hard’ and ‘scary’.

Louis Tomlinson’s father has been diagnosed with cancer, just 18 months after his mother’s death

Louis TomlinsonJust 18 months after Louis Tomlinson’s mother, Johannah Deakin, passed away after battling cancer, his father has spoken of his own liver cancer diagnosis.

Speaking to The Sun, Troy Austin, 49, confirmed he’s had a tumour removed, in hopes that the surgery has saved his life.

He said, “I believe my tumour was down to drinking and smoking. I can’t blame it on anything else…Some days I wouldn’t eat at all but would just drink and smoke. I would drink to celebrate the good times and drink to cope with the bad. Whatever life threw at me I would drink.”

The One Direction star hasn’t spoken to his father for around five years – Troy split with Louis’s mum when the singer was a week old.

Louis’s mother sadly passed away in December of 2016, just days before Louis was due to perform his new single on The X Factor final. The singer bravely took to the stage for an emotional performance, gaining masses of praise from viewers.

At the time of her death, the family released a heartbreaking statement.

“It is with immeasurable sadness that Johannah Deakin’s family said goodbye to Johannah in the early hours of Wednesday, December 7,” the family said in a statement at the time.

“Earlier this year Johannah was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of leukaemia that required immediate and continuous treatment.

“Johannah was first and foremost a truly amazing mother to seven children whose individual talents and success are a testament to the principles and beliefs she instilled in them.”

We wish Troy all the best with his treatment.

Up close and personal with Alisa Xayalith

At Rocking the Daisies 2017 we had the privilege of getting to know the front lady – Alisa Xayalith of the indie electronic band The Naked and Famous all the way from New Zealand. The talented and equally beautiful singer let us in on everything music, relationships and life experiences. Read here to find out what she had to say.Alisa Xayalith

What would you say is your best attribute?

I’m always thinking of other people and taking care of them. I’m such a nurturer and sometimes it might be to my detriment, but it’s just something that comes naturally to me.

Who or what inspires you musically?

I recently watched the Whitney Houston documentary, Can I Be Me, and it made me remember my childhood and my favourite singers growing up. Just seeing other people doing what they love is inspiring for me, and that motivates me. Especially in a creative field. I’ve always wanted to be a singer and I’ve always wanted to play music and the fact that I’m here in South Africa doing what I love, that’s incredible. Just the circumstance of what I’m doing and how I’m doing it is inspiring.

What’s your idea of a perfect date?

I don’t know, I’ve yet to experience it! I like going on adventures, and doing things that I haven’t done before. I also like getting out of town and driving somewhere listening to really great music and just chatting and connecting.

Alisa XayalithDo you have any regrets when it comes to past relationships?

I don’t see any relationships as a regret. Being with someone helps you discover yourself in ways you might not have realised, and in the long run it benefits you in growing as a person.

What fills the spot at the top of your dream destination list?

I’d love to go to Italy! I’ve never been there before. The history the food, the architecture and the fashion are just beautiful and breathtaking.

Who is your MCM? Why?

I love Elvis Presley. He’s my dream guy! He’s even my wallpaper.

Alisa Xayalith

What is the one thing you want to do while you’re in SA?

I’ve already done it – go on safari! That was the most unattainable dream I had as a kid. I never thought it would ever happen to me, but it did and I’m so grateful!

5 Minutes with Ashlinn Gray

There’s a new sound in town, and it’s Ashlinn Gray – a budding singer, songwriter and musician from Joburg. Find out everything you need to know about this exciting up-and-coming muso here!

Who is Ashlinn Gray?

Someone who is still growing up, but enjoying life as it comes. Someone who finds inspiration in music.

How did you first become involved with music?

Surprisingly my little sister was the singer and I was the actress. One day I went with her to a singing lesson and I was absolutely terrible! I’ve always been very competitive however, so I saw it as a challenge and practised everyday until I became better. Then five years later I discovered that it was something I wanted to make a career out of.

Who or what do you draw inspiration from?

Life in general. If something annoys me I’ll write a song about it, if something brings me joy I’ll write a song about it. But one of the main places I draw inspiration from is social media. If I’m scrolling through Instagram or Tumblr and I come across a quote I like, I usually write a song about it.

Do you find it hard writing your own lyrics

I’ve learned that you should never get too hung up on certain lyrics – if you’re not feeling a certain line then move onto the next one, otherwise it becomes forced and will show in the song. I also love writing songs with other writers. We bounce ideas off one another and it sometimes helps to see things from a different perspective, which can give a song an even more interesting story.

Is there someone you look to for help?

Other than my co-writers, I love asking my boyfriend for his opinion. I trust him and his judgment a lot. It’s always the most honest people in your life who give you the best feedback.

What was it like recording your first single, ‘Battleships’?

Terrifying! The scary part is that you’re singing into a piece of metal that’s supposedly going to absorb all the emotion and feeling you’ve put into the song that you’ve been working on for so long. It’s also the first song that people are going to hear from you, and use to decide whether they’ll continue supporting you as an artist. It’s definitely a nerve-wracking experience!

What is your latest single ‘Finding home’ about, and how is it different to your first single?

‘Finding home’ is about being in a place where there are multiple things holding you back, like insecurities and uncertainty, and in order to move forward you need to learn how to let go of them. However there’s comfort even in the discomfort of insecurities. So it’s about finding the right people in your life to build you up, and learning to let go. The difference between the two is that ‘Battleships’ is more of a fun pop track, whereas ‘Finding home’ is more personal, and is about real things going on in the world.

Ashlinn Gray

Who is your musical inspiration?

My top three have to be Julia Michaels, 21 Pilots and Sia.

What’s the next step for Ashlinn Gray?

Definitely releasing new music and building my brand.

Who is your dream collaboration?

21 Pilots is definitely at the top of my list!
