How Meghan Markle will be spending her first birthday as a royal proves what a good wife she is

It’s been a whirlwind year for Meghan Markle and August marks another milestone as she gears up to spend her first birthday as the Duchess of Sussex.

How do you spend your first birthday as a royal? With Prince George spending his 5th birthday on a private Caribbean island, the bar for decadent celebrations has been set pretty high. After marking her 36th birthday with Harry on a romantic getaway in Africa, we wondered if this year there’d be another exotic getaway on the cards to mark the Duchess’ first royal birthday. But forget lavish parties and far-flung vacations, this year Meghan will be stepping out of the limelight and spending her 37th birthday … at a wedding.

Proving once again that she’s a thoroughly committed partner and all-around solid gold wife material, Meghan will be eschewing a raucous weekend of celebrations and instead will be accompanying Harry to the wedding of his childhood friends, Charlie Van Straubenzee and Daisy Jenks.

One of Harry’s oldest friends, Charlie and Harry go all the way back to their school days at Ludgrove Prep School. You might have even spied Charlie at Harry and Meghan’s wedding, where he and his older brother, Thomas Van Straubenzee, served as ushers in their wedding party. Now it’s Harry’s turn to return the favour, serving as Charlie’s best man, while Meghan attends as his plus one.

No stranger to a school reunion wedding, in 2017, Meghan accompanied Harry to the wedding in Jamaica for one of his school friends from Eton. Since then the pair has gone from dating to married, proving that nothing brings a couple together like watching your other half sing along to Puppy Love at a wedding disco.

While some birthday divas might be reluctant to hand over their birthday crown, we’re sure that laidback Meghan will love spending her birthday with Harry and their closest friends. Save us a seat, Meghan, Harry’s best man speech is something we definitely don’t want to miss!

People are convinced this is what Harry and Meghan will name their child

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Now that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have finally tied the knot (how spectacular was the wedding, btw?), people are desperate for them to have a baby, which we already know is going to be ridiculously cute.

In an interview last year, Prince Harry said that the couple wanted to “start a family in the near future”, so we’re ready whenever you are guys.

But what will the couple call the new arrival? The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have a lot more flexibility than William and Kate did, as their child probably won’t inherit the throne, and so they don’t necessarily have to use a royal name – and now experts are predicting what they’ll pick.

Pamela Redmond Satran, co-creator of baby name website Nameberry, has put Diana down as a top pick if the baby is a girl, as a tribute to Harry’s late mother.

“Diana is, of course, Harry’s mother’s name and the people’s top choice for Meghan and Harry’s daughter,” explains Pamela.

“William and Kate broke some royal ice when they used Diana for one of Princess Charlotte’s middle names, but Harry and Meghan could take that one step further by using Diana as a first name. Diana is the name of the Roman goddess of the moon and the hunt. Her Greek equivalent is Artemis, which might be an alternative choice.”

Other choices for a girl include Eleanor, as it’s already an iconic name in royal circles and American feminism, or Sophia – a name that perfectly bridges British and American culture.

If it’s a boy, Pamela thinks Meghan will lean towards Alvin, after her grandfather, Alvin Ragland.

“Alvin was an antique dealer who left his house in Los Angeles to Meghan’s mom Doria,” explains Pamela.

Everybody thought that Kate and William’s son, Prince Louis, was going to be called Arthur, so there’s also the possibility that the royal name will take the top spot for Meghan and Harry.

James was also on the cards for Kate and Will’s kids, but Pamela explains that Meghan and Harry would be more likely to pick it.

Unfortunately for Meghan, even when the time comes, being a royal and living in a palace and having a wardrobe worth £750,000 doesn’t come without its drawbacks.

In accordance with royal protocol, the family adhere to a strict dress code, reportedly having to dress in ‘smart casual’ attire at all times. We already couldn’t hack it.

But not only that, the golden rule of the royal family is strictly no tracksuits.

Yep, that’s right. Meghan will have to say goodbye to leggings and opt for maternity dresses, just as Kate did right up to the birth of all three of her children.

She can definitely kick back in a tracksuit at home, so she doesn’t have to watch Netflix in a pencil skirt, but when out (and especially around the Queen), lazy-day-attire is totally off limits.

Thank God we can’t get a Prince to marry us…

Prince Charles has a nickname for Meghan Markle and it has a super interesting backstory

Meghan Markle BeautyWhile the Royal Wedding was the highlight of our TV calendar in all of its adorable glory (and the guest outfits), it’s about to get a hell of a lot cuter – with the nickname Prince Charles supposedly calls daughter-in-law Meghan Markle being revealed.

The Prince of Wales has named the Duchess of Sussex ‘Tungsten’, which is one of the hardest metals known to man. It may not seem like a compliment, but according to royal insiders, it means he appreciates Meghan for being a good influence on Prince Harry as he can be a ‘bit of a softy’.

The Royal expert told the Mail on Sunday: “Prince Charles admires Meghan for her strength and the backbone she gives Harry, who needs a tungsten-type figure in his life.”

“It’s become a term of endearment.”

It’s already known that Meghan and Prince Charles have a super close relationship, especially after he stepped in to walk her down the aisle at her wedding to Prince Harry when her biological dad couldn’t make the ceremony – and Charles was ‘terribly touched’ to have been asked to do the honour.

Charles is also said to have praised Meghan to his close friends.

He reportedly told them: “She’s so intelligent and so nice. She makes Harry happy. We could not like her more.”

Every single time Meghan Markle has broken royal protocol

Meghan Markle Mother OprahMeghan Markle is often described as a royal “rule-breaker,” which is both flattering and disconcerting. On the one hand, it’s admirable Meghan Markle is becoming a royal on her own terms and not paying much attention to some of the archaic traditions upheld by the family.

But these so-called “rules” Markle is breaking are so outdated and minute, the Internet often praises her for doing things as simple as wearing her hair down. It feels a bit backward to talk about women in these terms, so perhaps there should be a change in what we expect from female royals.

One way to do that is to examine all the times Markle broke this so-called royal protocol. You’ll see many of the items are quite ridiculous, which begs the question: Why are we policing royal women in these ways? Take a look, below, and chew on that thought.

1. Her sleeveless looks. Markle wore a dress with an off-the-shoulder neckline to Queen Elizabeth’s Trooping of the Colour ceremony in June, setting off a media firestorm. According to The Sun, it’s customary for royal women to “not wear off-shoulder or other more revealing styles.”

2. Markle’s coat of arms. The Duchess of Sussex received her crest directly from Kensington Palace shortly after her wedding, which breaks with royal tradition. Typically, the coat of arms is bestowed upon the bride’s father, so in Markle’s case, it should’ve gone to Thomas Markle. That didn’t happen for…various reasons…so Markle snagged the arms herself.

3. Her bridal procession. Markle began her walk down the aisle at St. George’s Chapel alone and was later joined by Prince Charles. Those first few moments of solitude were groundbreaking.

4. Markle’s wedding cake choice. She went with lemon elderflower. Traditionally, royal weddings have included fruitcakes.

5. Her political commentary. It’s customary for royals to stay out of political debates and remain neutral. However, Markle seemingly broke this unspoken rule in February when she vocalized her opinions about Time’s Up and female empowerment during a panel discussion at The Royal Foundation. “What’s interesting is that I hear a lot of people saying, when talking about girls‘ empowerment and women as well, you’ll often hear people saying, ‘You’re helping them find their voices,’” she said. “I fundamentally disagree with that. Women don’t need to find their voice. They need to feel empowered to use it, and people need to be encouraged to listen.”

6. Her cross-body bags. There’s no formal rule that prohibits these types of purses, but royal women typically opt for clutches. Some reports say this is so they can avoid shaking hands with people, which brings us to…

7. Hugs, selfies, and autographs. Markle hugged several children on a January trip to Wales, which is considered outside the norm for a royal. They also don’t really take selfies or sign autographs, both of which Markle has reportedly done in the past (notably on a trip to Cardiff.) When Prince Charles is asked for an autograph, he reportedly says, “Sorry, they don’t allow me to do that.”

8. Her wedding speech. Markle reportedly gave a very touching speech at her own royal wedding, which is something typically reserved for the notable male figures at the event: the groom, the best man, the father of the bride, etc.

9. When she spent Christmas with the royal family. This went against royal protocol because typically only married couples can join the queen for Christmas. Markle and Prince Harry were just engaged at the time.

10. The pantyhose. Markle’s been consistently wearing pantyhose since tying the knot with Prince Harry; however, she broke the unspoken rule about exposed legs in November during her engagement announcement.

11. The fact that Markle is divorced. A royal marrying someone who was previously married is rare, and certainly breaks with tradition. It should go without saying this custom (and many of these) are outdated.

12. Markle and Prince Harry’s PDA. By PDA, we mean hand-holding, but even that breaks with royal protocol to a certain degree. Consider the fact Prince William and Kate Middleton are rarely photographed holding hands.

13. The sermon at her wedding. Instead of choosing a standard British clergyman, Markle and Prince Harry went with Bishop Michael Curry, whose speech at their wedding was a highlight of the day.

14. Markle and Prince Harry’s first post-wedding kiss. Because Markle and Prince Harry didn’t get married at Buckingham Palace, they couldn’t share an iconic kiss on the balcony. Instead, they opted for a smooch right outside Windsor Castle, where they exchanged their vows.

15. Markle’s lack of a maid of honor at her wedding. She had too many good friends to choose from. If you remember, Pippa Middleton was Kate’s maid of honor in 2011.

16. Her messy bun. Royal women’s up-dos are historically tight and in place. Markle’s bun look from January 2018, however, was loose, free, and a total deviation.

17. Markle reportedly turning her back to the queen at the Royal Ascot. Granted, this is just a rumour, but if so this would be a break from tradition, as well. Customarily, you don’t turn your back to the queen.

18. The “duchess slant.” Royal women have a traditional way of crossing their legs, which Markle seemingly forgot during an appearance last month; however, she quickly corrected it. Of course, this didn’t stop trolls for coming after her. Again, this feels like an…unnecessary rule.

We can see why Serena Williams’s Wimbledon speech ‘for mothers’ had Meghan Markle in tears

Serena Williams US Open Pregnancy leaveSerena Williams lost to Angelique Kerber — a good friend and frequent rival — at Wimbledon on Saturday (6-3, 6-3) but that knock should by no means disqualify her from being the Greatest Of All Time.

Case in point? The gracious and beautiful speech she gave in the interview following her defeat, in which she kept her head held high and told mothers watching, “I was playing for you today.”

As Williams headed off the court following Kerber’s victory, the interviewer opened with, “It’s only your fourth tournament back [since giving birth to her daughter, Alexis], and you didn’t know what to expect. You had such a great tournament, and you played so well.”

Williams, nodding and emotional, replied, “It was such an amazing tournament for me. I was really happy to get this far.”

She continued, her voice breaking a bit as the stands erupted in applause: “It’s obviously disappointing, but I can’t be disappointed. I have so much to look forward to — I’m literally just getting started. So I look forward to it.”

“You’ve hardly played any matches, absolutely,” the interviewer said. “I tell you, there are mums everywhere that say, ‘How has she done this?’ You are super-human supermum.”

“No, I’m just me and that’s all I can be,” Williams responded. “But for all the moms out there, I was playing for you today, and I tried. But you know, Angelique played really well; she played out of her mind, so you know, it was really good, and I look forward to just continuing to be back out here and doing what I do best.”

Wimbledon’s official account tweeted a clip of the interview with the caption, “Grace, poise and emotion. A runner-up’s interview given by a true champion.”

You can see that her words touched two fans in the stands in particular—notably Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton, who were both in attendance at the final round. At the 40-second mark in the clip below, both duchesses—one a mom herself, the other Williams’ close friend—look visibly moved as Williams talks about playing for the moms watching the match.

The interviewer then asked what she said to Kerber during their hug after her victory. Williams responded, “Well, she’s an incredible person, Angelique is, and she’s a really good friend, so I’m really happy for it. It’s her first title so I know she’s going to really enjoy it and enjoy the moment. So congrats again, it’s amazing.”

Fans reacted to her speech with a ton of support, emphasizing the life-threatening complications that arose during her daughter’s birth and the incredible way Williams drove herself in just a few matches to be a Wimbledon finalist.

Her husband, Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian, also posted an incredible tribute to Williams:

“Days after our baby girl was born, I kissed my wife goodbye before surgery and neither of us knew if she would be coming back. We just wanted her to survive—10 months later, she’s in the #Wimbledon final. Congratulations, @angie.kerber. @serenawilliams will be holding a trophy again soon—she’s got the greatest one waiting at home for her. Our family knows she’ll win many more trophies, too. She’s just getting started. And I couldn’t be more proud.”

A true champion, even in defeat—and definitely, absolutely, still the G.O.A.T.

Duchess of Sussex had secret code to announce engagement to friends

The Duchess of Sussex had a secret code she used to tell her friends she was engaged.

Meghan Markle Beauty

The former ‘Suits’ actress tied the knot with Prince Harry at Windsor Castle in Windsor on May 19 – six months after they announced their engagement – but to ensure that their big news was kept under lock and key for as long as possible, the brunette beauty used emojis to ask her make-up artist Daniel Martin if he was around on their big day.

Speaking to HELLO! magazine, he said: “She [texted and] was like, ‘Hey – what are you doing May 19th? And then she sent me two emojis of the bride and groom. I was like, ‘Okay, yeah, whatever you need.”

The royal wedding was watched by billions around the world but, despite having all eyes on her, Daniel has admitted the atmosphere on the morning of the nuptials was “chilled.”

He explained: “We had breakfast. Guy, her dog, was with us. We were playing around with him. It was a very chill morning. Her mum was there, which was amazing.”

Meghan’s make-up on the big day received mixed reviews as she opted for a very minimalist look, but Daniel has said that is what she had asked for all along.

He said: “She’s very much about keeping her skin as real and natural as possible. When [Harry] takes the veil off, and sees her, that’s the moment I think a bride wants – when she has that moment with her future husband. It wasn’t about a trendy makeup. It wasn’t about a lot of eye, or a lot of lip. It was about her, and her being confident.”

Meghan Markle styled out this potentially awkward situation with the Queen like a boss

the queenIt was her first royal engagement with the Queen so she was most likely super nervous, but Meghan Markle proved she’s an absolute boss after styling out this somewhat awkward situation.

As MailOnline reports, the royal duo were in Cheshire for their first joint engagement and were filmed getting into a car together. This is where it gets awkward.

In the clip, shared by LBC, Meghan can be seen offering the Queen the option to hop into the car first – before suggesting they switch round. The pair looks a little confused and Meghan can be heard asking: ‘What’s your preference?’

The moment of confusion quickly passes and the duo hop into the car.

Speaking about the baffling situation, etiquette expert William Hanson told MailOnline: ‘The Queen always sits behind the driver.

“This is just a case of habit not protocol (protocol actually says the most important person sits diagonally behind the driver) but the Queen has always preferred being directly behind whoever is driving her.

“Meghan was probably not aware of this and the royal household may have forgotten to brief The Duchess of Sussex in this nuance.

“It was, however, a considerate gesture from the Duchess of Sussex to consider where the Queen would like to sit.”

We think Meghan pulled off her first engagement alongside the Queen with aplomb.

It comes after Harry and Meghan made an appearance on the balcony at the Trooping of The Colour and, naturally, Meghan looked incredible.

A lipreader revealed to MirrorOnline (via The Sun) that Harry reassured Meghan as they waited for the fly-past by the RAF’s Red Arrows – and what he apparently said is so.damn.cute. Prince Harry apparently asked her: “Okay?”, to which she apparently replied, “Yeah, are you?”, before admitting she was “nervous!”. The lipreader believes that Prince Harry then explained to his wife: “Then there’s the fly-past and then we all look up to the sky.”

What a man!
