People are criticising Kim Kardashian after North stepped out with straightened hair

Kim KardashianCan you believe it’s been five years since Twitter freaked out over the name North West? Yes, that’s right, the coolest mini style icon since Suri Cruise has just turned five. But this fashionista-in-training isn’t just serving up fresh new styles, she’s also the centre of some serious Kardashian controversy surrounding her latest look. Seen stepping out the day before her fifth birthday with mum Kim Kardashian to visit Dylan’s Candy Bar in New York, North beamed in a hot pink Adidas windbreaker and matching shorts, white Yeezys, a unicorn bag and every 5-year-old’s favourite accessory, a candy necklace. But fans were quick to notice that something about the look was seriously different – the birthday girl’s signature curls had been straightened.

Her hair styled in a tight, sky-high-ponytail with a single braid down the centre part, North looked as proud as punch with her birthday hairstyle, but not everyone is in love with this new look. As photos have circulated the internet, many argue that Kim Kardashian has taken her daughter’s fashion-conscious look too far by straightening her natural curls.

Concerned about the message that Kim’s decision to straighten North’s hair sends out to her daughter, fans are worried that this could seriously affect North’s self-esteem and even lead to long-term negative self-image issues.

Taking to Twitter to slam the beauty mogul, many argue that Kim should be encouraging North to embrace her natural curls, not alter them with heat styling or extensions. Others argue that at just 5-years-old, North is too young to be making such major alterations to her hair and that she should be allowed to just be a kid, without so much attention being put on her hair.

But not everyone thinks that Kim was wrong to break out the straighteners. Fans of North’s new look think that she looks great and that having her hair straightened for her birthday is harmless fun. A little girl who seems to love getting dressed up and trying out new looks, fans of North’s Ariana Grande style ponytail argue that if the birthday girl wants to have fun with a new hair-do, then Kim shouldn’t have to defend her decision to straighten her daughter’s hair.

Until now Kim has always embraced North’s natural hair, ‘North is so proud of her curly hair’, the reality TV superstar revealed in an episode of KUWTK. Kim has even enlisted the help of Kim Kimble, owner of West Hollywood salon Kimble Hair Studio, to give her a masterclass on how to style North’s natural hair, then sharing photos of her gorgeous braids on Instagram.

What do you think of Kim’s decision to straighten her daughter’s hair? Harmless fun or harmful body alteration?

Kim Kardashian just accepted fashion’s biggest award with an iconic speech

Kim KardashianKim Kardashian West’s mega-empire has officially earned the fashion world’s recognition. (No, her stint as co-owner of DASH didn’t count.) At the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s (CFDA) annual awards ceremony on Monday, June 4 —often called the Oscars of fashion—Kim Kardashian West accepted the organization’s first-ever Influencer Award.

The award is as straightforward as it sounds: the CFDA introduced the award to recognize Kardashian West’s enormous impact on the fashion industry, simply by posting online to her enthusiastic audience. (Thanks to her, we’ve all at least considered wearing biker shorts and a blazer.) To accept the history-making honour, Kardashian West made a brief, on-brand acceptance speech that showed just how ‘influential’ the star is.

Kardashian West appeared onstage for all of a minute, but her words packed a punch. After thanking the CFDA for honoring her with an award, she started with a pointed joke: “I’m kind of shocked that I’m winning a fashion award when I’m naked most of the time,” she laughed.

Then, Kardashian West got serious. She remembered a former publicist who doubted her ability to land a cover on a fashion magazine—a dream that Kardashian-West always had. “[S]he said, ‘Let’s get some realistic goals, because that’ll never happen,’” Kardashian West recalled.

But, true to Kardashian form, Kim had a comeback. “Of course I sent her my Vogue cover when it came out, an autographed copy,” Kardashian West said. “So it’s really a trip to me that I’m now here getting an award for fashion, something that I’ve always loved.”

With that anecdote handy, Kardashian West’s award symbolized just how much impact her following has had on the fashion market. Busy Philipps presented Kardashian West with her award, noting that many people view Kardashian’s social media empire and accompanying selfies as the “ultimate symbol of female empowerment.” “You are the influencer’s influencer,” Philipps said. “Your impact on how women dress and what they want to look like has had real cultural significance.”

Kardashian West didn’t need a silver trophy to know the scope of her influence; she has 112 million Instagram followers to remind her. Still, she was thrilled to be recognized by the biggest organization in American fashion. (A sentiment she shared on her Instagram after her award was announced.) “I’m so humbled by this award,” she told model Candice Huffine on the red carpet before the event. When Huffine asked about who influences her, Kardashian West deferred to her famous personal fashion arbiter, husband Kanye West. “I’m super inspired by my husband, fashion-wise, because he really helps me to develop my look,” she said.

The first-time award was conceived by designer and CFDA board member Tommy Hilfiger, who said that Kardashian West’s influence is impossible to ignore in fashion—even if Kardashian West isn’t running a label herself. “Kim is the most important and powerful influencer in the world. Her reach extends far beyond her own brands,” Hilfiger said in a statement announcing that Kardashian would receive an award. “Every time she wears, posts or talks about a fashion brand, there is an immediate and significant increase in both awareness and sales.”

First, she dominated TV, then beauty, and now fashion. At this rate, there’s an EGOT in Kim Kardashian West’s future.

Taylor Swift called out Kim Kardashian at her first Reputation show

end gameTaylor Swift kicked off her Reputation tour in Arizona on May 8, and after a few weeks of hints about the tour, we finally know what Taylor and her team have been working on — and it involves some serious soul-baring onstage, as well as a shoutout to her boyfriend, Joe Alwyn.

Though the Reputation album itself deals with some of the controversy and fallout Tay experienced after the Kim Kardashian-Kanye West Snapchat leak back in 2016, Taylor has never really spoken publicly about it before — until now (snake references in her music videos notwithstanding). She decorated her Reputation stage with snakes, the emoji that Kardashian’s fans used against her post-leak, and opened up about the experience during the show.

Taylor asked the audience what they thought about the snakes, then explained their significance in her life at the moment. “A couple of years ago, someone called me a snake on social media and it caught on,” she said. “A lot of people were calling me a lot of things on social media. I went through some really low times for a while because of it. I went through sometimes when I didn’t know if I was going to get to do this anymore.”

Apparently, she decided to use the snake motif to make a point about bullying. “I wanted to send a message to you guys that if someone uses name calling to bully you on social media, and even if a lot of people jump on board with it, that doesn’t have to defeat you. It can strengthen you instead,” she said. “I learned a really important lesson that I’ve been telling you from the stage for about 10 years, but I never had to learn it so harshly myself — and that lesson has to do with how much you value your reputation.” The singer went on to say that her break from the spotlight helped her figure out who she really was and who she wanted to be, and emphasized the value of having good friends around you who know who you are at heart.

That’s not all that happened at the tour, either. When performing her Reputation song “Gorgeous,” Taylor took a minute to shout out another important person in her life as of late: her boyfriend, Joe Alwyn, who was in attendance at the first show. Fans captured her pointing at him during the song and totally lost it. Taylor has kept this relationship pretty private except for song lyrics and a few secretive symbols, so to see outright PDA from the two was pretty major.
But, after all, this is a new era for Taylor: she has shied away from press interviews since Reputation came out, and it seems she is now ready to use her own (literal) platform to take control over the narrative. Are we ready for it?

Kanye West is giving his most radical performance yet

Whether by design or accident, there is something strange and new happening as John Legend, T.I., and others enter the conversation.

On Tuesday morning, Kanye West dropped footage of two conversations he’s had over the past month. The first, posted on his website is a short, edited video of the artist in his home, debating T.I. in what, ostensibly, was the conversation that led to the recording of “Ye vs. The People.” The second is an extended interview with Charlamagne Tha God, covering everything from mental health to politics, being forty, and more—a conversation in which the artist reflects on where he is now. In both, Kanye is quietly insightful and brashly ignorant, as wrongheaded as his critics have said and more lucid than he’s given credit for. Kanye West is at a crossroads, and so are we. But even as he sets his image on fire and burns his cred to the ground, Kanye West is doing something radical, unprecedented, and maybe even important.

When discussing Kanye West, it’s necessary to first acknowledge the truth of his celebrity. Kanye West is an artist who rose to fame thanks to escalating displays of provocation and gross narcissism coupled with consistently brilliant and commercially successful music. Kanye West has benefited from a culture of misogyny and succeeded despite never having to reckon with his attitudes towards women. Kanye West has, for years, been the benefactor of a cult of personality willing to overlook or redirect the blame for his every misstep and offense. (We’re as guilty as anyone.)

Since his return to Twitter, West has been flirting with conservative voices and ideas in a manner that comes across as definitively pro-Trump, inciting the ire of the public and sending his progressive peers running to try and course-correct their misguided friend.

Let’s put to bed the idea that Kanye means anything other than what he says. Whenever a celebrity of West’s stature expresses views that don’t line up with those of their fans, there’s always a tendency to suggest there’s some greater scheme at play. It’s the five-dimensional chess Trump supporters on Reddit invoke in favor of a more simple truth: That the man is an idiot. Similarly, it’s likely that Kanye’s publicly expressed views and privately held beliefs are, if not one and the same, then very closely aligned. Kanye West is not a man whose fame came from playing things close to the vest, and he is also a man who is clearly contemplating his vast power and influence and trying to achieve a form of enlightenment through which he can wield it. Unfortunately, as Damon Young writes at VSB, West is endorsing the sort of intellectualism of those who do not read.

“To [West], people like Trump or Candace Owens are free thinkers—mavericks unafraid to challenge the status quo,” writes Young. “But if he’d actually pick up a book (and not just any 48 Laws of Power-ass book, but the right books), he’d be aware of the danger of that type of contrarianism and aware that for people like Trump and Owens, their words aren’t about free thinking. They’re specifically and intentionally tethered to white resentment, which is also often tied to anti-intellectualism. They’re actually the antithesis of free thought. They don’t think. They incite. ”

There is a performative aspect to Kanye’s persona that’s also worth keeping in mind. West is and has always been a provocateur—despite his current good-vibes-and-open-dialog mindset, the man has never known how to wield his celebrity in any other way than carpet bombing the culture, expressing himself in as high-impact a manner as he can manage, because that’s the only way anyone’s ever listened to him, no matter how valid his arguments. Kanye is essentially doing what he always has done: court outrage to advance his career. That he has a new album on the horizon is no accident. Only this time, he’s doing it using his inside voice while stepping across the one line liberal America has drawn in the sand following the election of Trump.

“[West is] happy to play the foil as long as we react to him, whether it’s hate, love, loving the old Kanye, or finding him deeply problematic but mostly tolerable,” wrote our own Chris Gayomali last summer. “You can learn a lot about a person by how they feel about Kanye West.”

But Freethinking Kanye—whether by design or accident or hubris—is the conduit to something we’ve never really seen before, something radical that’s worth observing for what it is: We’re watching famous people of color publicly debate politics, advocate for themselves, and call each other out amongst themselves. He has forced his more progressive peers to articulate their politics explicitly in public forums, forcing them to draw lines around what’s acceptable and what’s not, to reject his galaxy-brain takes and call them out for the disingenuous bullshit that it is. He’s got John Legend on record texting and tweeting about the human cost of Trump’s policies. He has Janelle Monáe talking about how the narratives constructed by so-called freethinkers are used to justify oppression. And yes, T.I., of all people, at a loss for words in a video posted onto kanyewest.com, is saying that there’s “some shit you don’t align with, and some shit you don’t go against.” The staging and optics practically feel Kris Jenner-esque.

Kanye is an artist who taught a generation of marginalized people to find a wellspring of confidence long denied to them, to carry themselves as people with worthwhile things to say, to push against overwhelming cultural forces that would conspire to keep you benched in your own story. And now, in a stunning act of self-immolation, Kanye is teaching that same generation to rise up and speak against their idols, to leave them behind.

Kanye West explains Jay-Z feud

Kanye West fell out with Jay-Z after his mentor failed to attend his wedding.

The Stronger rapper admitted he was ‘hurt’ when his friend and wife Beyonce failed to join him in Italy in 2014 when he tied the knot with Kim Kardashian West – with whom he has children North, four, Saint, two, and three-month-old Chicago – because the couple are like ‘family’ to him.

Speaking to Charlamagne Tha God on iHeartRadio’s ‘The Breakfast Club’, he said: ‘I was hurt about them not coming to the wedding. I understand they were going through some things, but if it’s family, you’re not going to miss a wedding.

‘I’m not using this interview to put out any negative things, but I gotta state my truth. You just start coming up with all type of crazy things in your head, like ‘Why?’ ‘

The 40-year-old star insists he is ‘past’ feeling disappointed now, though he was upset at the time, and though the pair are back on speaking terms, Kanye has never directly asked Jay about the snub.

He said: ‘I don’t think I ever asked him that question, directly.’

The ‘Bound 2’ hitmaker also addressed Jay’s track ‘Kill Jay-Z’, from his 2017 album ‘4:44’, in which the Tidal founder slammed Kanye and claimed he ‘gave him 20 million’ when in return he was called out on stage by the rapper in a lengthy rant in 2016.

And Kanye claimed he was left ‘frustrated’ by the lyrics of the track because the money referenced was from a Live Nation touring deal.

He said: ‘That concept that he gave me the money that’s what frustrated me because actually the money he got it from Live Nation. It was a touring deal.

‘But the fact that it was worded that it came from him — I’m a very loyal, emotional artist, person, that made me feel like I owed more than the money itself. It put me in more of a controlled situation. I’m only acting out of love — I don’t need to be controlled, I just need to be inspired and informed.’

The former ‘Watch the Throne’ tourmates haven’t seen one another since their falling out but Kanye said they are ‘good now’.

He added: ‘We’re texting each other. It’s positive energy. I haven’t seen him, but I can feel him.’

Kim Kardashian gave us a sneak peek of her new fragrance in the most extra way possible

Kim Kardashian

From her beauty collaborations to her fashion campaigns, Kim Kardashian likes to go big when it comes to anything KKW branded. After launching her cosmetics line, Kim is steaming full speed ahead with her newest product: a gorgeous new perfume.

After she unveiled her Kimmoji Hearts Fragrances earlier this year, Kim is back with a brand new fragrance – and it’s inspired by her own body, naturally.

In classic Kim style, she took to Instagram to share a snap of her naked body covered with clay to promote the new fragrance.

‘We took a mold of my body and made it a perfume bottle,’ she captioned the image.

In another image, she shared a teaser of what’s to come, writing:’KKW BODY 4.30 by Vanessa Beecroft #KKWFRAGRANCE.’

Speaking to Business of Fashion recently, Kim explained: “The next fragrance I have coming out in May, KKW Body, is so amazing. It is a sculpture, basically, of my body.

“It’s really cool. The scent is so good, I’m so proud of it. It smells to me like what I would think golden smells like, even though that’s a color and something that’s just luminous.”

Sounds super luxe to us. We can’t wait to get a whiff of Kim’s latest scent.

Kim released her first fragrance back on February 1. Here we breakdown the story behind the scent…

The first hint that KKW beauty was coming

Back in September last year, Kim shared a photo of white orchids that almost went unnoticed in her full of selfies and family shots feed – BUT a mysterious new Instagram account was tagged: @kkwfragrance.

The inspiration

Two months later and the new Insta account had 15,000 followers and a lot of information on the new release. Kim’s first fragrance was inspired by the power of crystals – and the bottle is clearly a replica of the stones; chic and borderline minimalist. We love it.

A post shared by KKW FRAGRANCE (@kkwfragrance) on

For those that don’t know, it’s believed that crystals have the power to hold onto energies, and can be “programmed” to carry certain types of positive feelings – as well as be used for cleansing, pulling negative feelings from your body.

A post shared by KKW FRAGRANCE (@kkwfragrance) on

The scents

The fragrance is not actually orchid-based, but floral. The three scents? Crystal Gardenia, Crystal Gardenia Citrus and Crystal Gardenia Oud.

Just like tuberose, gardenia is usually interpreted as a strong scent that people either love or hate. It can be musky or it can be refreshing – depending if it’s used as the perfume’s base or as a top note.

The campaign

And as anything Kardashian-related, the fragrance came with a photoshoot. A gorgeous Kim Kardashian-West posed with crystal necklaces and natural hair and makeup.

Kim Kardashian roasted Kanye West on Twitter and now Chrissy Teigen’s involved

2015's BIGGEST celeb storiesCan you name anybody savvier at managing a public persona than Kim Kardashian? OK, fine, anybody savvier than Kris Jenner and Kim Kardashian. No? Exactly. Kim is so good, she even knows when she should clarify her own jokes.

Case in point: On Tuesday afternoon, her husband, Kanye West, went on a bit of an unfiltered tweeting spree now that he’s back on Twitter, with one of his tweets catching the eye of his partner. “Sometimes you have to get rid of everything,” West tweeted, among other helpful sentiments such as “try to avoid any contractual situation where you are held back from your ideas,” and “distraction is the enemy of vision.” (It’s true! Great advice.)

“Wait…EVERYTHING?!?!?! 🙋🏻” Kardashian responded. It was clearly meant to be a one-and-done joke until her next social media musing about, we don’t know, Kimoji, but Chrissy Teigen joined the conversation to keep the good times going: “I have an air mattress here and I have been itching to bust it out if you need.”

“Might need some more for the kids? Just not clear on what everything really means. I need clarity,” Kardashian retorted. “Thanks for being such a good friend. Maybe John can call and inquire? But maybe he means friends too? This is confusing.”

Now, obviously this is just banter among friends that’s meant to be humorous, but since tabloids are, well, tabloids, and haters gonna hate, hate, hate, Kardashian made a point of defending her sense of humor: “For anyone who has absolutely no humor in their soul please know my tweets are a joke and I will die laughing if I see blogs and media really think I am being serious. So don’t even try it.”

And that, my friends, is today’s edition of Keeping Up With the Kardashians‘s Social Media.
