Halima Aden returns to the refugee camp where she was born

It’s World Refugee Day, so we’re throwing back to last week when supermodel Halima Aden returned to the refugee camp where she was born.

She’s a model who has graced magazine covers (including Vogue Arabia) and fashion week runways, but Halima Aden has certainly not forgotten her roots. The 20-year-old Somali-American model, who rose to fame after donning traditional Muslim dress to compete in a US beauty pageant in 2016, has returned to the refugee camp in which she was born, and for a very important reason.

Aden, who has worked with Nike, Alberta Ferretti, and Yeezy, to name just a few, was in Kenya this week to deliver a TEDx talk from the Kakuma Camp. The veiled runway star was born in the camp in 1997, and moved to the United States six years later, settling in Minnesota. The camp, situated in northwest Kenya, hosted the TED event on June 9, which brought together a number of current and former refugees besides other speakers and performers. The media organization asked participants to “share stories of perseverance and creativity”, according to its website, with the theme given as “thrive”.

Bye bye NY & hello KENYA 🇰🇪

“The aim is to steer away from the one-sided narrative of suffering and dejection,” the event page stated. “[It is] also about showcasing how refugees can help change not only their lives but the communities and countries in which they live.” The gathering marked the first time a TED event has been held in a refugee camp.

Aden revealed she was thankful for getting to the opportunity to revisit the camp, which was founded in 1992 and is currently home to more than 185,000 inhabitants. “This camp taught me so many lessons and I’m so grateful I had the chance to return,” the model told her 620,000 Instagram followers. “A lot has changed since I’ve left but we still have a long way to go.” The model also revealed she worked on a short documentary about returning to Kenya, in collaboration with UNICEF and Teen Vogue, though no release date has yet been given.

Aden also shared a short snippet of her TED Talk, though the full video is not yet live on TED’s YouTube page. Other speakers on the day included Yiech Pur Biel, who was part of the first refugee team in history to compete at the Olympics, and Mesfin Getahun, an entrepreneur who launched a successful wholesale business from the camp.

“I want you to remember that although the children here are refugees, they are children,” Aden said during her talk, according to Reuters. “They deserve every opportunity to flourish, to hope, to dream, to be successful. My story began here in Kakuma refugee camp, a place of hope.”

Priyanka Chopra says she’s ‘found her feet’ in her 30s

Priyanka Chopra feels like she’s “found her feet” in her 30s.

Priyanka Chopra

The 35-year-old actress – who turned heads at the Royal Wedding in a custom-made Vivienne Westwood lavender suit – says she hasn’t always been the fashionista the public has grown to love and that there are many embarrassing style moments that she’d like to forget.

Priyanka confessed: “My teens were a little bit more tight pants, ponytails, hoops, puffy jackets. I was that girl in the 90s.

“And then came the 2000s and me becoming an actress and I started wearing everything. Jewellery, clothes, hair, make-up! And then I realised that I looked like a Christmas tree going forward. So then I backtracked a little and I became too simple.”

The ‘Quantico’ star now thanks stylist Mimi Cuttrell – who’s known for her work with models Gigi and Bella Hadid – for not being afraid to take risks when it comes to trying different outfits.

Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar magazine, she said: “I’m always changing out of clothes, changing into clothes, and being really chic at it. That’s why I need amazing people like her.”

A recent iconic moment for Priyanka was her Ralph Lauren ensemble at the Met Gala, where all eyes were on her as she stepped onto the red carpet in a deep burgundy velvet gown and jaw-dropping gold beaded hood, which took 250 hours to create.

The Indian-born beauty – who’s rumoured to be dating singer Nick Jonas – went on to explain how her style has evolved with age and that she now sticks to what feels most authentic to her.

She revealed: “I think I’ve finally found my feet in my 30s, as a woman and as a fashionista.

“I think I’ve realised that I really have to be true to me and what I want to say, whatever the trends might be, what am I feeling at that moment.”

Sneek Peek: Rihanna Previews Her Lingerie Collection as Only She Can

Rihanna’s fans didn’t have to wait long to get a glimpse of her new lingerie line, Savage x Fenty. On Instagram, Rihanna celebrated National Lingerie Day by posting a photo of herself in a piece from the collection, revealing in the caption that the line will go on sale worldwide on May 11 on her own website. Commenters reacted with the appropriate amount of excitement, with one even writing, “I’m never wearing clothes again.”

That commenter might not be alone. If Rihanna’s teaser picture is any indication, Savage x Fenty toes the line between lingerie and ready-to-wear. In the image, Rihanna sports a pink lace bodysuit with red detailing that, while definitely intended for the boudoir, could be layered under a blazer or bomber as a way to channel Rih’s own daring style on the street. Other videos and images of the collection released seem to imply more of the same, like a video of a model in a white lace crewneck top or another in a pink top lined in marabou feathers.

Chances are, however, that there’s more to Savage x Fenty than meets the eye. All will be revealed on May 11 on Savagex.com.

Glee actor Mark Salling has been found dead at age 35

Mark Salling

Mark Salling, the former Glee actor who played bad boy Noah “Puck” Puckerman on the show for six years, has been found dead at the age of 35.

His attorney Michael J Proctor, verified the news in a statement: “I can confirm that Mark Salling passed away early this morning.”

“Mark was a gentle and loving person, a person of great creativity, who was doing his best to atone for some serious mistakes and errors of judgment.

“He is survived by his mother and father, and his brother. The Salling family appreciates the support they have been receiving and asks for their privacy to be respected.”

In October, Mark pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography, and avoided a 20-year jail sentence in the process.

He was arrested in 2015, and in 2016 pleaded not guilty to charges of receiving and possessing child pornography.

Mark originally faced 20 years in prison, but documents obtained by several outlets show that he entered into a plea bargain with California’s district attorney.

Prosecutors said that more than 50 000 indecent images and videos were found on Mark’s laptop, with some of the victims as young as three to five years old, and a further 4 000 images and 160 videos found on his flash drive.

The 35-year-old actor, who played Puckerman from 2009 to 2015, was been ordered to pay the equivalent of R638 000 to each victim, and was facing between four and seven years in prison. However, the sentence was yet to be officially approved by a federal judge.

As part of his plea bargain, TMZ reports, Mark was made to undertake counselling, and subject to 20 years supervised release with restrictions on his interactions with under-18s.

Mark was to be registered as a sex offender, and not allowed to live within view of parks, playgrounds, school yards, or any other places where under-18s could be expected to hang out.

Lady Gaga shows off huge engagement ring at the 2018 Grammys

Lady Gaga

As the Grammys got underway in New York, all eyes were on the red carpet – the looks, the beauty and of course, the nod to #TimesUp.

As far as appearances go, Lady Gaga has truly stolen the show with her gorgeous full-length, high-neck lace Armani catsuit and a billowing skirt. She pinned a Time’s Up badge to her shoulder with a white rose, and showed off a huge rock on her ring finger, leading many to think that it’s the ring Christian Carino gave her when he proposed.

It’s gorgeous!

She also rocked a snake ring, which many think was to show her support for Taylor Swift – she’s always been a fan!

Gal Gadot has the best response to Wonder Woman getting snubbed by the Oscars

Gal Gadot

The 2018 Oscar nominations are stacked this year. Greta Gerwig scored a directing nod for Lady Bird; both Octavia Spencer and Mary J. Blige are nominated for Best Supporting Actress; Get Out racked up; and for the first time ever, a woman is in the running for Best Cinematography. Even with all this progress, though, there’s still a glaring issue: Wonder Woman didn’t receive a single Oscar nomination. Granted, superhero films aren’t typically considered awards-season fare, but Wonder Woman was groundbreaking. It was one of the highest-grossing films of 2017, critically acclaimed, and featured a nuanced, impressive performance by Gal Gadot. Why the film was snubbed by the Academy — even in the technical categories — is a mystery.

Twitter users made it very clear they’re not happy about Wonder Woman‘s lack of nominations, but Gal isn’t sweating it. The actress told Entertainment Tonight she has no hard feelings about Wonder Woman being left out of the Oscars race. The experience making the film, for her, was the real reward.

“I was very moved and touched by the people who were disappointed that Wonder Woman wasn’t nominated, but we certainly never did the movie for that,” she told ET. “I think that you can’t have it all. We’ve done this movie and it was received in such an amazing, wonderful way, and we want to stay humble and grateful, and we’re going to have another movie, so who knows? Maybe the next one.”

Let’s get the 2020 Oscar campaign for Wonder Woman 2 started right now. Lord knows Gal deserves the gold if she has to battle Ares again.
